Q: What is the difference between a Trainee Permit and Certification?
A: The board may require the holder of a Trainee Permit to practice only under supervision and may limit the scope of practice depending on education. Certification is the form of licensure allowing acupuncture practice that is issued to health care providers already licensed in another profession.
Q: What is the difference between Certification and Licensure?
A: Certification was created for practitioners who hold another professional license. The scope of practice for Certification and Licensure are the same.
Please refer to Rule 105 for the CE Requirements.
The Board conducts annual audits to ensure compliance with the continuing education requirements. Audits may be initiated any time after you renew your license. By submitting your renewal and answering “Yes” to the question that you have met the continuing education requirements, you are certifying to the Board that you have already obtained proof of having completed the required continuing education.
When you are audited, you must submit a listing of all continuing education courses completed during the previous year AND proof of attendance documentation for each course. Failure to submit the required documentation may result in Board action against your right to licensure.
The Board of Acupuncture will be undergoing negotiated rulemaking during 2025 to discuss fee increases, switching to biennial licensure, and other potential rule changes. You can be notified of the dates of the meetings by subscribing to Townhall Idaho, or by opting into DOPL notifications.
Please contact us with any questions via email acu@dopl.idaho.gov or phone (208) 334-3233.
