EXAMS
The Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses administers the exams for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). You must first apply and receive an approval prior to scheduling an exam. For information on how to submit an application or for a copy of the application, please see the License Application page.
Exams are proctored in Boise, Blackfoot, and Coeur d’Alene. For information relating to the exam you are approved to take, please refer to the exam bulletins listed below. You will find information customized to the exam that you are approved to take. Payment is expected at the time that you schedule. If paying with a credit/debit card, a 3% service fee will be applied.
The Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses complies the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require special accommodation, please see the instructions and application form located under the trade license you are approved to take. Requests for special accommodations can be submitted prior to the scheduling of your exam.
Exam Forms
Once you have been approved for an exam, you will have one (1) year to schedule and take the exam. You must contact the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses at least two (2) days prior to the date you would like to test. Exams are given for Plumbing journeyman (including specialties) and contractor (including specialties).

Plumbing Journeyman Examination Procedures
On September 4, 2024, the application and examination process for Plumbing Journeyman and were revised. Applicants must now take and pass the applicable IAPMO examination prior to applying for licensure.
Online Examination Scheduling
Before scheduling your exam, you will need to log into DOPL Online Services at edopl.idaho.gov to create a customer account.
For the fastest and most convenient examination scheduling process, PSI recommends applicants register for examinations online. Applicants register online by accessing PSI’s registration website at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/idcon/test. Online registration is available 24 hours a day.
Step 1: Log onto PSI’s website and select Sign-in/Create Account.
Step 2: Select Create Account. You are now ready to pay and schedule for the examination.
Step 3: Enter your zip code and a list of the testing sites closest to you will appear. Once you select the desired test site, available dates will appear.

Call PSI at (855) 340-3713 to schedule an appointment for the test. The times of operation for live operators are as follows:

Contractor & Limited Licensing Examination Procedures
The following examinations are not administered through PSI. Applicants for the following licenses must first apply to DOPL to receive approval to schedule an examination at one of our three offices:

Permit Refund Process
- Duplicate permits for the same scope of work will be refunded in full.
- Any overpayment on permit fees will be refunded in full once confirmation of overpayment has been verified and recorded by the Inspector, Supervisor or Program Manager.
- Permits purchased out of DOPL jurisdiction will not be eligible for a refund unless there has been a recent city annexation or due to an internal processing error; in these circumstances, the fees paid will be refunded in full.
- Jobs cancelled and requested to be voided will be refunded, minus $65.00 for each inspection conducted.
- Expired permits will not be eligible for a refund.
