Clinical Supervision Reports – to be submitted with Clinical Social Work application
Guidance For Supervised Clinical Experience (Supervisees)
Guidance for Supervised Clinical Experience (Supervisors)
Q: I am a licensed master social worker (LMSW) and want to start working toward my clinical license. How do I start?
A: You must first obtain a supervisor who meets the requirements of Rules 002.03 and 100.03 and collaborate to formulate a supervision plan. You must have an LCSW supervise at least 50% of your clinical hours. Please review the Guidance for Supervised Clinical Experience for additional requirements.
Q How do I track my supervision hours?
A: A sample log has been developed to help you keep track of your supervision hours. The use of the sample log is optional and it should not be submitted with you application. The Clinical Supervision Report forms submitted by you and your supervisor are the official record of supervision hours for the purpose of licensure.
Q: How do I become a registered clinical supervisor?
A: Idaho no longer requires registration for clinical social work supervisors. Per Rule 002.03, clinical social workers who provide supervision must have been licensed as a clinical social worker for at least two years and must not have been disciplined for acts relating to client care within the past five years. They must also complete 15 hours of clinical supervisor training before providing supervision. Fifty percent of supervision may be obtained from a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical professional counselor, or marriage and family therapist who is licensed and in good standing with their regulatory board. Review The Guidance for Supervised Clinical Experience for additional information.
Q: Does the advanced supervision training have to be an in-person seminar/training or can it be taken through an online course?
A: It can be in person, online, or a webinar.
Q: How can I verify that the course I am interested in taking is approved by the Board?
A: The Board does not preapprove courses. If the course is an advanced supervision training that provides instruction on supervision topics beyond those covered in basic supervision training, the Board will take it into consideration. Advanced training may focus on special topics or emerging and innovative methods in clinical supervision.
Q: I am having difficulty finding a course in advanced supervision. Can you give me some ideas of where I can locate this course?
A: You can check with the colleges/universities and associations such as NASW and AMFTRB.

Please complete your renewal application and payment of fees through the ONLINE renewal system. There are no additional fees for this service. Documents, if required, may be uploaded when you renew. If you have questions, please contact renewal@dopl.idaho.gov or 208-334-3233.
If you have not yet met the continuing education requirement, do not submit a renewal indicating that you have. Submitting a fraudulent application for licensure is grounds for discipline against your license.
For your license to remain valid, it must be renewed before the expiration date each year. Remember that you must have an active license to practice in the state of Idaho.
As a courtesy, license renewal reminders are mailed to your mailing address of record approximately six (6) weeks before the license expiration date. If you do not receive a renewal notice, you can still renew online and update your address if needed. You are responsible to timely renew your license whether you receive a renewal notice or not.
Please note: If you fail to renew your license before its expiration date a reinstatement fee will be required by Idaho Code 67-2614 and cannot be waived. In addition, you may be required to submit continuing education or other required documentation prior to the reinstatement of your license.
EXPIRED LICENSE
Q: I have let my license lapse, what must I do to activate that license?
A: A license that has been lapsed less than five years may be reinstated upon submission of a renewal application together with the payment of renewal fees, a license re-instatement fee, and proof of completion of continuing education as required in the rules. If a license has lapsed for more than five years, a new application for licensure is required.
REQUEST FOR OFFICIAL LICENSE/REGISTRATION CERTIFICATION
Each state requires different forms of certification of licensure. Please check with the state where you are applying to see what is required before requesting certification from Idaho. Certifications can be obtained two ways from Idaho:
Q: If I move to Idaho, do I have to have a license certification?

CONTINUING EDUCATION – Please review Rule 100.05
Licensees should maintain documentation verifying CE compliance for a period of four (4) years. This documentation is subject to audit by the board.
NOTE to CE providers: The Board does not pre-approve courses for credit.
Q: How many hours of continuing education do I need to maintain my license? Can I use excess hours for the next renewal?
A: Every 24 months prior to renewal licensees must complete thirty(30) contact hours of continuing education that includes 2 hours of ethics. For example, if you renew your license on 7/31/24, you must have completed 30 hours of CE which includes two hours of ethics between 7/31/22 and 7/31/24. There is no carryover for excess CE hours. For additional information regarding the CE requirement please refer to Rule 100.05.
Q: When do I provide the CE documentation to the Board?
A: There are two instances when you are required to submit certificates of completion: 1) if you do not renew your license prior to the expiration date (your birth date) or 2) if you are randomly audited.
Q: Do continuing education courses/seminars require pre-approval by the Board?
A: No, it needs to meet the requirement as stated in Rule 100.05.
Q: Can I do online continuing education courses?
A: Yes, online courses germane to the practice of social work are allowable.
AUDITS
The Board conducts audits to ensure compliance with the continuing education requirements. Audits may be initiated any time after you renew your license. By completing your renewal and answering “Yes” to the question that you have met the continuing education requirements, you are certifying to the Board that you have already obtained proof of having completed the required continuing education.
If you have questions about the CE requirements, you may e-mail the Division office at swo@dopl.idaho.gov.
